We may not use the names Deep Run Turnpike or Westham Plank Road anymore, but Mechanicsville Turnpike has an enduring ring that has survived the centuries. After all, the name literally states its final destination. (Although shouldn’t it be called Richmond Turnpike when heading back into town?)
This map from the American Memory project at the Library of Congress show the layout of Richmond sometime int he 1860s (the exact date is unknown).
