Social media day

Today is the second annual Social Media Day, a celebration of the technology that has allowed us to connect with each other in new and interesting ways.

The “holiday” was started last year by Mashable as a way to bring all of us just a little bit closer by holding meetups in cities around the world. Meetups are planned in 600 cities in 93 countries — including Richmond.

Tonight’s local meetup will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Capital Ale House in downtown Richmond. It’s being hosted by Fahrenheit Technology, and I’ve heard they will be giving away prizes and drink tickets.

Our friends over at Richmond.com report that Fahrenheit also will be announcing a  monthlong social media experiment called “Tweet Around The World.” Participating parties in the experiment will be asked to use the Twitter hashtag “#tweetaround” on their own Twitter handles.

You can keep up with the latest on Social Media Day around the world by following @mashSMday or #SMDay on Twitter.

But don’t try following @SMDay, because that account is owned by a woman named Susan Day — and she hasn’t tweeted since last July.
