Mobelux’s Garrett Ross, rear, and tumblr’s Marc LaFountain chat up members of the audience after their presentations at the C3 breakfast.
Dozens of Richmond’s creative class rose early Tuesday for breakfast and a discussion on social media with tumblr’s Marc LaFountain and Mobelux’s Garrett Ross at the Corrugated Box Building in Manchester.
The breakfast/talk was presented by C3, the Creative Change Center, whose mission is to spark innovation across the Richmond region. Like tumblr and Mobelux, it also calls the Corrugated Box Building home.
LaFountain, who heads up tumblr’s Richmond office, said that despite its growing popularity, the company still has no plans to add advertising to users’ blogs.
“We are doing everything we can to make tumblr free and easy to use,” he said. “We’re never going to make you run advertising on your blog.”
LaFountain said that although tumblr has yet to turn a profit, it has robust funding from a number of venture capitalists.
Ross, one of the co-founders of Mobelux, which makes apps for mobile devices, told the audience that his company believes the future will be focused on hardware such as smart phones and tablets.
“It’s very, very exciting to see this innovation take place,” he said.
